Lando was one of the Sacketts, but if memory serves, he was the only Sackett tossed into a horrific Mexican prison. He survived with silver-dollar-bending strength and a hellacious skill-set of the fisticuffs variety. The Sacketts were always hard hombres, but Lando was particularly bad news. I idolized him and he lead me to more reading about boxing. These days, the more I read, and the more widely I read, the more aware I am that boxing, or The Sweet Science, holds an allure for many authors. Sometimes its an attempt to understand the sport. Sometimes its an attempt to prove that its not a sport at all, but a barbaric enterprise: sanctioned brutality and blood for the mob. Boxing gets romanticized, demonized, misunderstood constantly, but so many authors  write about it, or at least make the attempt. I started accumulating boxing books as a young boy, and now Im finally ready to admit that Im never going to stop. I couldnt get enough. Still cant. And Im not alone. Hemingway wrote about boxing and boxed himself, although he may have suffered from romantic delusions. Some of cinematic storyteller Stanley Kubricks best work is found in his boxing photography. Norman Mailer was passionate about people hitting each other, but thats no surprise.  Read the Battle Royal opening of Ellisons  Invisible Manit will rattle your teeth. Joyce Carol Oates  wrote a book called  On Boxing,  and its great! There are so many, but today I want to steer you towards four of my favorites. Here are a few that I would encourage anyone to start with. The Abysmal Brute  by Jack London This is a simple, straightforward story about a hulking (but sensitive and literate!) farmboy who comes to the big city and begins to dominate the world of boxing. He winds up fighting against the sports rampant corruption when he realizes that even though hes winning his fights, (and hed win regardless, hes the best boxer) the fights are fixed to make money for other men. En route to the happy and inspiring conclusionsomething you dont get often with Londontheres a love story, some skillful writing about boxing itself, and a great underdog story. Ive never heard anyone else talk about this book. Please read it. Im very lonely. Rope Burns: Stories From The Corner  by F.X. Toole This brilliant collection of boxing stories, which houses the story  Million Dollar Baby,  is one of the best short story collections Ive ever read, period. And its definitely my favorite collection of boxing stories. Toole was a professional cut man. He knew boxing and it shows. When someone says a book is gritty, I usually think of Rope Burns  and wonder if they know about it.  If you dont find Tooles writing persuasive, I fear you are simply beyond persuasion. The story of the books publication is pretty cool, too. One Ring Circus: Dispatches from the World of Boxing  by Katherine Dunn Did you read  Geek Love,  also by Dunn? Please do. Ir you read  Geek Love,  would you have expected its author to write a book of boxing essays? Me either. But Im happy to report that  One Ring Circus  was every bit as unputdownable for me, if less perverse and insane and obscene and with fewer mutilation-based cults The Pugilist at Rest  and  Sonny Liston Was a Friend of Mine  by Thom Jones Besides  Rope Burns,  these two collections by Jones are as close to the visceral craziness of boxing/fighting as anything else Ive read. Jones writes well about anger, men, mania, fists, addiction, and people edging ever closer to their limits. The stories in these books arent only about boxing, but they contain some of the finest boxing fiction Ive ever read. Read  Dynamite Hands  and tell me you werent tempted to go try the isometrics exercises against the nearest brick wall. Packets are routed independently. Packets enter the network at a specific node where they may be queued in a buffer to wait for an outgoing channel to become free. This continued in a hop by hop manner until the packets finally arrive at their destination. Packets may arrive the same destination by taking different routes. That increases efficiency of transmission resources. Also queued packets in the buffer will cause a variable delay and throughput, depending on traffic load. Basic network is shown in figure 1. Nicholas Sparks is one of the world’s beloved storytellers (Sparks). He was born on December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska, and now he is currently living with his five children and wife, Catherine, in North Carolina (â€Å"Wedding, The† 331). In 1985, he broke the school track record for the four by eight hundred relay in track in his freshmen year at Notre Dame and later on he was offered a full track scholarship (‘Nicholas Sparks Biography†). He started trying out hand writing after he suffered from an injury that was in track. After he tried some different careers, he co-wrote a novel with Billy Mills Wokini named, A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding (â€Å"Nicholas Sparks†). Later on while living in North Carolina, he wrote the novel, The Notebook, which garnered a widespread recognition for Sparks. Someone said, â€Å"Nicholas Sparks follows up his beloved bestseller The Notebook with a touching novel about one man’s attempt to saving a failed marriage† (BookPage). His novel, Message in a Bottle, was inspired by the tragic death of his mother in 1989 in a horseback riding accident. Later on in 1996, his father died in a prematurely in a car accident. Spark’s younger sister, Danielle, died of brain cancer, but before she died, he was inspired to write the novel, A Walk to Remember. The Wedding is about a man, Wilson Lewis, living in New Bern who forgot about his and his wife, Jane, 29th anniversary, and she became very upset with him. During the days, Wilson would think about their relationship how to get Jane to love him the way she did when they were younger. Every week, he would visit Jane’s dad, Noah married to Allie Calhoun from The Notebook (â€Å"Wedding, The† 330), at the retirement center. When Wilson visits Noah, they talk about how everyone is doing and Wilson would ask Noah for some advice. Throughout the novel, Noah collapses and has heart attacks, but after staying in the hospital for a little while, his health goes back to normal. Reaching towards the climax, Jane and Wilson’s oldest daughter, Anna, stops by the house and announces that she is getting married (â€Å"Wedding, The† 330), but the only day she can get married is on her parent’s 30th anniversary. After Wilson and Jane agreed to the marriage, Anna and Jane had one week to plan the weeding and Anna let her mother choose all the decorations and items for the wedding. On the day of the wedding, everything was setup perfectly, but when Jane saw Anna not wearing the wedding dress, she was confused. So Anna told her that the wedding was not for her, it was for Jane. The first scenario of appearance and reality in The Wedding is Noah and Allie’s mythic relationship (â€Å"Wedding, The† 337). About a month after Allie had died, Noah would sit at his desk rereading the letters that he and Allie had written to each other over the years or going through Leaves of Grass. When Wilson finally got Noah out of his room, they went to the pond in the morning. Wilson, brought Noah to the bench, and that morning was the first time they saw the swan (Sparks 153). The swan towards them, and Noah thought that they should have brought some bread with them so they could feed that swan. The next time Wilson came back to visit Noah, he was not in his room; instead, he was at the pond. He seemed to have become fond of the swan and somehow became friends with the swan. When Wilson would approach the swan and Noah, the swan would be staring at him and showed him no fear at all. Noah would always be at the pond feeding the swan Wonder Bread on a daily basis in all kinds of weather. He has sat in the rain, cold breeze and burning heat, and as the years go by, he would be spending more and more time every day on the bench. He would just stare and start talking to the swan. After a few months, Wilson asked Noah why he came to the pond so often. Noah replied back saying that the reason why he comes to the pond is because she wants him to. When Noah says â€Å"she†, he is referring to the swan and thinks that the swan is Allie (Sparks 154). â€Å"Allie,† he repeated. â€Å"She has found a way to come back to me, just like she promised she would. All I had to do was find her,† Noah explained (Sparks 155). Noah believes that the swan is Allie’s reincarnation. Wilson had no idea what to say to Noah’s explanation, and he was confused and startled when he heard Noah say that. The doctors, for example, doctor Barnwell and children are starting to think that Noah was delusional (â€Å"Wedding, The† 337). Another scenario that Sparks develops appearance and reality is the rose garden. Noah’s present to Allie of a rose garden in the shape of five concentric hearts is an expression of ideal and true love, the work of a true romantic (â€Å"Wedding, The† 337). The rose garden started off when Allie was first pregnant with Jane, because while she was pregnant, she became sick. Noah thought that the sickness would go away after the first couple of weeks, but it became worse. She barely got out of bed and become even more miserable by the day, so Noah wanted to give her something pretty to look at from her window. He thought that the heart by itself looked kind of boring and plain, and thought about planting bushes around the heart, but he kept procrastinating on it. Noah told Wilson that in the beginning of this process there was only one heart, not five hearts, because he did not plan on it. Soon after, she became pregnant again, and by that time Noah finally tried to plant the bushes. Allie thought that the reason why he made the concrete hearts was because they were having a baby. She said that it was the sweetest gift that he has ever done for her (Sparks 201). Since Allie said that, he could not exactly stop making concrete hearts. The first time he made the concrete heart; it was a romantic gesture for her, but by the last concrete heart that he made, he felt that it was more of a chore for him. He had to plant roses, and that made it harder for him. He had to keep cutting the roses, so that they can form perfectly. Later on, Allie’s feelings changed for the concrete hearts, because she asked Noah to plow the whole garden under the ground. The reality is that the rose garden was five separate gifts, one heart for each child that was born. The rose garden always held certain sadness for Allie because one of their youngest children, John, had died of meningitis at the age of four. Noah said, â€Å"As much as she loved the garden, she said it was too painful to look at. Whenever she looked out the window, she’d start crying and felt melancholy, and sometimes it seemed like she’d never stop† (Sparks 202). Loosing John almost killed her and Noah. After John’s funeral, she could not eat or sleep, and when she was not in tears, she would wander around in a daze look (Sparks 203). When Allie looks at the garden, she thinks about Noah’s love and the death of their beloved child, John. As the family viewed the monument to love, it also became a tragic loss in reality. The final scenario that devolved the theme, appearance and reality, is the wedding from the climax to resolution. When Anna and Keith, her boyfriend, asked her parents if she could get married, Jane certainly thought it was going Anna’s wedding. The truth was that it was not Anna’s wedding because it was actually a wedding for Jane that Wilson should have given Jane a long time ago. It was part of Wilson’s plan all along. He planned this event for about a year. Anna and Jane went to all sorts of stores and shop looking for items, decorations, the perfect wedding dress, and gowns for the bridesmaids. When everything appeared to be Anna’s indecisiveness over wedding details, the reality was that it was Anna’s plan for Jane to pick out what she wanted. Wilson came up with idea of having the wedding at Noah’s house in the garden. He hired plenty of workers to help him tender the garden, and clean the inside and outside of Noah’s house in a couple of days. During the preparations for the wedding, Jane had thought that getting the best photographers, musicians, and caterers was just a coincidence that they had cancellations the exact weekend of the wedding, but truth be told that it was a part of Wilson’s plan to make Jane surprised on getting her dream wedding, since when Wilson and Jane first got married, then were married in the court house. When Jane saw Anna not wearing her wedding dress, she was terribly confused (â€Å"Wedding, The† 337). After Anna said, â€Å"This was never my wedding, Mom. It’s always been your wedding† (Sparks 266). Jane was breathless with wonder and disbelief (Sparks 267). Even though Jane was still astonished on what just happed, the wedding had to go on. Wilson and Joseph ran to the front next to the minister, Harvey Wellington, and Jane got ready to walk down the aisle with Noah. When the time came, Wilson got the rings from Joseph. History failures. When something went wrong The greatest screw-ups in history Studies reveal it is almost impossible to pick one screw-up in history and name it the worst. Some say that it is the invention of the nuclear energy, but today, we are going to talk about the times when the said energy was not discovered and people had to think of other ways to screw themselves up to earn a place in the archives: Franz Ferdinand and his driver The turn that started World War I could not have been made, if the Archduke’s driver had not steered the wheel in the wrong direction. Some would say this is fate, others would call it bad luck, but the story is the following: on the day when the Archduke and his wife went for a walk in a personal automobile, there had been an assassination attempt in one of the streets. The driver successfully avoided the bomb†¦ only to encounter one of the assassins later, when Franz Ferdinand decided to pay a visit to the victims of the explosion in the hospital. An open gate of Constantinople If you think that Constantinople had no chance of withstanding Turkish attacks, you are utterly wrong. Byzantines did have one visible advantage, and that was the advanced defense system in one of the city’s walls, which secured the place from the enemy.The failure occurred, however, when one of the commanders in charge forgot to close the gates, and the opposing army sneaked in unnoticed, to the sheer horror and surprise of the Constantinople citizens. The capture of the capital continued with the Ottomans establishing a flag on one of the city’s buildings, which ensured their reign and victory for the decades to come. Napoleon invading Russia Napoleon gathered the largest army in continental Europe and thought it was enough to conquer Russians. The war campaign started in the month of summer, when it was hot and humid, and the emperor thought it would be only a few months before they take over Moscow and proclaim their reign.However, Russians held out surprisingly long and proved to be stronger than was originally believed. Napoleon’s army was forced to endure bitter Russian weather and eventually died of cold and freezing temperatures, occasionally helped out by the locals, whose hearts melted at the sight of the defeated foe. Interestingly, Hitler made the same mistake during World War II, when his army turned out to be completely unprepared for the Russian climate and was freezing to death as well. Battle at the Alamo Mexican General Antonio Là ³pez de Santa Anna led his troops to the American borders in the war against the States and was 99% sure he would be the one to win the battle. On his way to meet the Texan rebels, though, he decided that a small lesson of courtesy and social justice would not hurt, and stopped at the city of Alamo.He then proceeded to take over the city and caused a huge massacre where many locals perished. For all those wondering, General did win the battle, but the cost was too high. The ones hesitating whether to support revolution and the Texan rebels were now on the American side, and Mexicans lost all the key points they previously captured, which resulted in Texas becoming the part of the United States. The British Isles invasion A long time ago, Anglo-Saxon troops decided they did not have enough people to protect the British Isles, so they called mercenaries from the borders to help. Unfortunately, when the soldiers on hire arrived at the place to see thousands of defenseless men and women at their mercy, the thought of being paid to protect did not seem appealing. Their next move was to suppress the people and take over the Isles themselves instead of being financed by the government.When the Anglo-Saxons learned the truth about the mercenaries and the way they brought trouble to their own country, they had to deal with the consequences. It was too late, however, and the years of bloody conflict and violence began. This is the kind of failure that was caused by the inexperience of the war generals and the carelessness of the government, who thought that mercenaries were reliable enough to protect their lands. Another historical and accurate proof you should not trust a person who does things out of financi al reward alone. The Austrian army fighting itself The misunderstanding between the generals and the armies led to Austrian soldiers fighting themselves. This happened during the Battle of Karansebes, where the original scheme was to attack the Turks during the night.However, it was dark, and the armies did not communicate well with one another (they were previously divided in two), which led to one part violently attacking another and causing chaos. When the truth was finally revealed, it was already morning and more than 10, 000 soldiers were badly wounded or killed. The Turks did arrive in a few days, though, only to find their enemies unable to participate in any of the war moves and quickly overtook the parts of the land, which is now Romania.

However, the text is probably popular because it is useful! If you need a book and will use it after the course ends, buy it new. If you are strapped for cash or the usefulness of the book is questionable, buy it used. Will the book help you? Sometimes a book is recommended, but not required. This is true for many study guides. Ask yourself whether or not you will benefit from using the book. Can the book be borrowed? Is it useful enough to buy, new or used? When in doubt, talk with your instructor. Can I afford it? Although this is a good question to raise regarding buying books, it is NOT a question to ask when deciding whether or not to obtain a book. The difference? Buying a book involves money. Obtaining a book might involve money, but it also could include borrowing from a student or professor. I dont recommend sharing important books. If you need a book, then get it!

Everyone, at some point in their life, has made a mistake. Sometimes we get lucky and only falter a little, making it through the problem relatively intact. Often times, our failures teach us valuable lessons that we only gained because of the experience we gathered after messing up. I have personally achieved a wealth of knowledge and experience just from all of my own little mishaps, and a few major ones. One instance of a failure that taught me well was when I tried to find a quick solution for boiling eggs. I was so tired of what I considered the long process of boiling eggs that I formulated a more imaginative way to cook them. I gathered my eggs in a large glass mixing bowl, poured water on top of them, and popped the bowl in the microwave. The 21st century poses vast challenges for public health, with environmental threats, cultural diversity and an ever aging population. The role of health promotion is as important as ever, within this assignment I will look at the issues we face and the techniques used to alter public perception and behaviour. One definition widely highlighted from the World Health Organisation states that health is ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well being’ (WHO 1947). This definition encompasses the indicators of poor health but does seem to view health as something that is quite conventional and static. This can be contrasted to a definition from Parsons who defines health as ‘the state of optimum capacity for an individual for the effective performance of the roles and tasks for which they have been socialised’ (Parsons 1971). Here we are viewing health as something maintained to the standard needed for us to perform our lifestyles. Health promotion is of great apprehension not only for the NHS but also many other groups that are involved in health care such as social, environmental and welfare practices. At its core is the intention of empowering individuals and communities to allow greater control of their health by providing information, education and support. Varying methods and strategies are used to change people’s perceptions of health, with the aim of working toward the creation of stronger communities and improved future health for all. The health belief model emphasises the function of beliefs and perceptions in human decision making. Originally developed by Rosenstock in 1966 it looks to predict patterns in health behaviour, such as willingness to partake in vaccinations and act upon health advice. It suggests that the factors that govern an individual changing their behaviour are based around an assessment  of how feasible change is and the benefits provided. It puts forward the idea that people need relevance or a trigger to initiate decision making (Naidoo, Wills 1994). This model incorporates Bandura’s concept of self-efficacy. This suggests that an individual must believe they have the capability and insight to see an intended behaviour change through (Bandura 1991). The empowerment model seeks to expand the individual’s capability to control their own health. This model facilitates a move toward change by building an individual’s sense of worth and identity, allowing them to indentify their own health concerns (Naidoo, Wills 1994). It aims to develop decision making and problem solving skills, giving the individual the tools needed to see changes through with independent thought and action. This model can be very effective for young people who sometimes struggle to make independent decisions and are susceptible to peer and environmental pressures. There is a strong relationship between employment and health. The main negative being occupational ill health, this can be an issue for many people working within manual job roles, as well as people working in stressful high pressure environments. It’s shown that having little or no control over work processes and being in lower positions can contribute to ill health (Marmot et al 2006). Unemployment is of a greater risk to ill health than employment, moving people into work can be seen as a health promotion in its own right. Employment brings higher living standards, more disposable income, improved confidence and wellbeing. Gender is still a large determinant, men generally work in more manual roles and take poorer care of their health overall. Loosing work can actually double the risk of a middle aged man dying within the following five years. Evidently there are strong links between employment and men’s wellbeing. Men over the age of 65 are also three and a half times more at risk of developing coronary heart disease than women (DH, 1998). Men’s life expectancy still lags behind that of women and within Europe there are large inequalities in life expectancy. These differences are greatest in men, where as the difference between the best and worst countries for male life expectancy is 17 years, for women it is 12 (BBC, 2013). Clearly there ar e health inequalities within gender that need to be addressed. The promotional campaign stoptober is clearly targeted toward working classes; the majority of the subjects pictured are in uniforms that are associated with lower paid roles. There is evidence to  suggest that smoking related deaths are higher amongst poorer social classes (ASH, 2006). The branding used is very simple and appeals to people’s logic through the use planning, note making and goals toward quitting. This appeals to the individual and gives a greater sense of empowerment and personal involvement in the process of creating change. The campaign seems to utilise the stages of change model, the process is broken down into stages and encourages involvement in the planning process. Initially encouraging the participant to write down why they are taking part (contemplation) and then take part in a planning process (preparing to change) along with accepting extra support (Prochaska, DiClemente 1992). Evidence from studies shows that when people are involved in a planning process there is a higher probability they will succeed (McLeod, Clark 1993). There is no mention of the harms of smoking and shock tactics are not used. Raising awareness of the dangers is clearly not enough and more personal tactics are used. With addictive habits highlighting the negative consequences does not seem to help create behavioural change, clearly ‘short term gratification is a greater incentive than long term harm’ (Nanidoo, Wills, 1996, pg 182). There is a very collaborative feel behind the promotional material with comments like ‘you’re not in this alone’ and ‘were with you all the way’. There is clear intent to show that the task of quitting is achievable and by anyone. As Bandura states ‘seeing people similar to oneself succeed by sustained effort raises observers beliefs that they too possess the capabilities to succeed’ (Bandura 1994). This is clearly a core strategy of this campaign, when we see someone succeeding this helps to increase own self efficacy. Health has broad range of definitions and many see health as an all encompassing ideal state. Some however acknowledge that a functional state of health can be achieved despite the presence of illness or disease. The role of health promotion is to help people work towards their personal health potential, at the same time reducing the strain on services. With the recent rises in poverty there is clearly demand for new and effective health promotions. Stoptober meets these needs well by using tried and tested health promotion techniques. It is an effective and socially relevant campaign and last years figures of ‘160 000’ quitters speaks volumes on its success. What was expected of soldiers on their return to Australia after WWI and WWII? How did soldiers respond to these expectations? The process of repatriation of servicemen who had fought in the First and Second World War was uneasy, as these men returned to a society that had undergone great transformations. The responses to the socially accepted standards of behaviour were widely variable, however this essay will aim to demonstrate some of the ways that returned soldiers negotiated the transformed social milieu that they had returned home too. An example of this was the story of the ‘Man in the Bath.’ Published in 1924 in the Sydney Morning Herald the piece depicted the eulogy of Trooper Rolph. The odd placement of the eulogy within mainstream new content demonstrates an active attempt, on b ehalf of the soldier writing the piece to bring the consciousness of service men’s suffering to the forefront of public discussion. The piece was written by a fellow solider and the article tells the horrific story of the soldier who was ‘flayed alive by barbarous Huns’’. These lines play on the ANZAC myth of the Australian for example the brave Australian hero battling a vicious enemy. The article details Rolph’s return home, as a result of gas poisoning, suffered inflictions that caused daily suffering until in the years leading up to his death. The article written by one of Trooper Rolph’s fellow servicemen uses the graphic imagery of Rolph’s physical afflictions, such as ‘his skin peeled off and refused to grow back’ to elicit concern and a guilty conscious of the public. The discourse relating to veterans suffering is one means soldiers used their role as a powerful symbol to attack the bureaucratic system. Garton argues that this
